This study has evaluated of the status of forest roads since the statutory regulations fırst introduced in 1937 with regard to forestry in Turkey, and an assessment of the results obtained since then. In Turkey, the modern systematic forest road network plannings were launched in 1964 and completed in 1974. Over this period, the country's need for forest road s was ca\culated as 144425 km by taking only fertile forest lands into account in Turkeyand plans were drawn up accordingly. However, the developmenıs in forestry science and practices and the results obtained through production technologies and techniques as well as rational forestry and plan implementation requirements entailed revision of such plannings. lt has been observed that based on a plan prepared in accordance with that new understanding, the need for total forest roads in Turkey was 20 i810 km, and that 133693 km portion of which, corresponding to 66.25%, was corıstructed by the end of 2004. With a view to be capable of conducting modern forestry activities, our country's forests should be provided with a systematic roads network by completing as soon as possible the construction of the remaining portion of such roads.
