Winter is a critical period for many species of wildlife. Coverts the n grow smailer in area and, without foliage, afford less protection. Available food supplies also diminish in both quantitiy and quality. The species of wildlife that hibemate or migrate do not suffer from these changes, but by midwinter the upland game birds, many songbirds, some smail mammals, and, more rarely, big game mammals are often crowded into restricted patches of cover and forced to subsist on scanty and undependable foods. As a result, starvation may kill these creatures or so weaken them that they become easy victims of predatory animals. In order to protect wild animals from the extreme winter conditions winter feeding campaigns should be organized.
