The objeetive of tlıe investigation presented here vvas to determine the service life of timber to be used above ground, especially tiıat of milhvork, impregnated vvith a variety o f preservatives, or lıydrophobic materials, in outdoor e\posure tests of long (ncarly 10 years') duration. The investigation, initiated in 1983, is presently in progress.
